GM,DS! A Dangerous Billion Dollar Blunder — a true story

October 28th, 2008

That title’s my book, I just published it this year, after 20 years of research and writing.  Read it and be amazed to learn how in our society one person,  multi-millionaire Floyd Odlum,  legally corrupted a willing a government bureaucrat and Congress to buy billions of dollars worth of mission-useless aircraft from his corporation (read rich-man’s-business)  and still had the dumb American public admire him and think he’s wonderful!   The main persons in the story actually lived and did what the story tells.  Only their dialog is made-up, but based on their own biographies.  The amazing aircraft — the world’s first dedicated nuclear bombers — and the corporations and how they created them, and the pilots who flew them, are true.  The results of testing, I discovered, included many lies.  I name the guilty parties, some names hidden until the Freedom Of Information Act, for 50 years.  The facts are in microfilmed records of the two Research and Development programs of Convair and Northrop, controlled by the Air Force.  I had to add a fictional protagonist to carry the thread of the complex story. .. which is fact.

The tale starts right at the start of World War II, and ends right at the beginning of the Korean War … which I suggest would not have happened if certain AIr Force officers and the Convair CEO had been ethical and capable.

I was able to debunk all the Air Force lies about the Northrop Flying Wings, with a little help from the last Northrop test pilot, Charles Tucker, still living in California, a brave man who actually flew the giant Wings successfully through all their testing, even recovering from a spin.  He flew the Wings about 100 hours,  loved the plane, and says the government’s claims about it being unstable or unsafe are “bullshit”.

The events and talk are a little technical, but a lot of illustrations and photos help get the main ideas across … about how close Germany and Japan came to winning WW II and intended to atomic-bomb us had they succeeded in their rsearch … and how the USSR, at the start of the Cold War when they created their own atomic bombs in 1949, actually had a chance to conquer the world with WW III, because our present laws for corporations put incompetent and unethical men in positions to steal our wealth and waste it on useless arms … a reality that is still a terrifying threat today … terrifying if we weren’t so ignorant about our government and business corruption.

How long will our luck last??  Will we put a corrupt Congress and Administration back in power again?

Well, here I am, all alone again — naturally. : )

I just sold three books — “GM,DS! A Billion Dollar Blunder”, which can be seen at www.redhandpublicaitons.com or at Amazon.

I hope some interest sparks more sales, as this story is true, and shows how just one super-rich person can skew military sales and other governmental functions, through use of his money and friends and the corporation laws … which need to be changed, so we stop sending ignorant andunethical representatives and administrators to spend b illions of the wealth we produce by working and creating goods.

Probably should have added a little humor.  But it is full of fascinating new facts about WW II and how close we came to a Third Reich dictatorship that was to last 1000 years.

Anybody have a comment?

Hello, I’m the site person.

Vitae: I’m 78, married 52 years, six progeny (four engineers, a teacher-writer, and a speech pathologist), and Cynthia and I live in Carlyle, IL. Took a degree in Journalism from Notre Dame in 1953 and went directly into Navy air, officer and pilot for four years. Then wrote, mainly, as reporter for St. Louis Globe-Democrat, then tech writer for ITT Federal, the PR Manager for Falstaff; then started by own company to certify and manufacture airplanes… ran out of money and market in three years, but with an FAA Provisional Type Certificate for a 6-place lightplane I designed, built and flight tested. Then worked at engineering management and various other things while free-lance writing and designing/building sport aircraft. My book is a true story of how the Air Force bungled buying their first dedicated 4000-mile-target Strategic Air Command bomber for the Cold War, wasting billions and inviting the Korean War, costing us 33,000 military deaths. See it at www.redhandpublications.com. Presently completing a little Lancair 235/320 experimental aircraft so C and I can easily visit three of our offspring in the Boulder CO area, one in Prince George, BC, Canada, and one in the Los Angeles area. Conversation about flying, writing, basic politics, and family cordially invited.
